Go Preach and make Disciples PDF Print E-mail

The Command is to Go Preach the Gospel and make disciples

I want to talk a little today about the responsibility we have as soul winners. Paul says that one plants, another waters, but god gives the increase. We plant, or water the seed, but then itís between them and God. God gives the increase. He  will continue to woo them, to make his presence known, but a mans heart is his own. God gave us the gift of free will and He will not make a man come to Him.

The great commission is twofold. In Mark 16:15 Jesus said that we should go into all the world and preach the gospel. Matthew 28:19 Jesus says go ye therefore and make disciples of all nation.

So we preach the word, to get them saved, then we make disciples of those that have come to Christ. Inviting someone to church is not preaching the gospel. Many people have never learned to witness, so they invite people to church in place of witnessing. Unsaved individuals have no desire to attend church. They may come if you have a personal relationship, but unsaved strangers are not coming to church. You canít disciple a person that is not saved. No amount of persuasion, befriending or follow-up is going to make a Christian out of an unsaved person. I suppose you might hope that if you can get them into church enough times that something may happen in their hearts and that might get born again. That is part of witnessing. You keep lighting matches until the fire finally starts. One thing Iíve noticed, is that when a person is born again, you donít have to call them to remind them to come to church or read their Bible. Theyíre calling you. They want to talk about Jesus, they want to fellowship with you because you are another believer.

Lets talk for a minute about the parable of the sower. Jesus defined the soils. The first soil was rocky and hard. You can witness to this person on the street, or bring them to church if theyíre your friend. But the words have no real effect. Theyíll sit next to you at church and look frequently at their watch because theyíre bored. They can hardly wait for the service to end. They will probably not agree to go to church again unless they really like you and donít want to offend you.

The second soil is shallow. They seem to respond with enthusiasm as you witness. Theyíll readily agree to attend your church and seem really excited when  service starts. You think that youíve hit pay dirt so you really start to pour it on, inviting them to Bible studies and Christian events, which they readily agree to attend. Then Monday morning at work they run into their old buddies who laugh at them when they talk about Jesus. Immediately they feel offended and decide that church is not worth the persecution. Now they avoid your calls and give you the run around.

The next soil is even worse. They gladly let you witness, receive the word, come to church, even get involved. For a while all seems well. You have high expectations and are ready to move on to the next prospect. Then the cares of the world, the job, kids soccer, family meetings, itís a never ending list of important events that draw them away from church. You canít really say anything, because everything they tell you is a legitimate excuse and you donít want to drive them away by putting them on a guilt trip. By and by the cares of the world choke out the seed.

Now the last is the good soil. They receive the word with gladness. Attend church whether you remember to call them or not. They read their bibles, attend bible studies, start their own bible study. They start winning souls and produce fruit for the Kingdom, 30, 60, 100 fold. They have ears to hear what the Spirit says and begin to obey.

The main point I want to bring here is that we are only responsible to lead them to Jesus. Salvation comes to them from God and they are the ones responsible for responding. Your responsibility is to disciple the ones that are saved. If they have no zeal for the things of God, they are probably not saved. No matter how often they attend church.    My wife and I have had this conversation, how certain people when weíre around them talk about nothing but Jesus. Theyíve always got a scripture or a testimony. God is always moving in there lives. There is definite evidence of their born again status.

Jesus says by their fruits you shall know them. What ever is in you will come out. Jesus says out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

Jesus says that unless a man is born again he cannot enter into the kingdom of God . Jesus says if a man is born again and abides in Him he will bare much fruit. In fact, if he is not baring fruit he is not abiding in Jesus. He will be cut off as a branch that is withered and tossed into the fire.

The evidence of our relationship with Jesus will be in the fruit we bare. So Jesus said that we should make disciples. That would mean that the people we disciple must be told that they must be baring fruit. That if theyíre not baring fruit then theyíre probably not saved. It seems pretty simple to me. Jesus said that you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. The fact of the matter is, if you love Jesus, then the fruit will manifest. We produce fruit out of our love for God. We witness because we donít want people to go to hell.

So you think that youíre nurturing some baby Christian at church. You donít want to push them to serve because youíre afraid of offending them. Theyíve been a baby Christian for years because nobody wants to tell them the truth. They might leave the church. The fact is, theyíre probably not even saved and your letting them sit in their lukewarm pew, when the Lord says he will vomit them out. They think theyíre saved and they will probably end up in hell thinking that going to church every week makes them a Christian.

I think that Jesus spoke real clear when he said lay down your life, take up the cross and follow him. He said that we needed to count the cost. We need to peach the gospel and make disciples. He said if we love him we will keep his commandments. If we donít keep his commandments then we donít love him.

Do you really believe that Jesus is the Son of God. That He died on the cross and after 3 days He rose from the dead. That He died to bring salvation to the world. That He commanded His disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel. Do you really believe these things? Are you grateful for your salvation, for the suffering that Jesus did so that you might be saved? If you really believe then your response has to be to obey His commands. Friendship evangelism has itís place. But youíre not winning them to you, your winning them to Jesus. You preach the gospel, then follow it up by walking the walk. Your walk has to match your talk or you are a hypocrite and you will do more harm than good.

And finally, Matthew 22:37 thou shall Love the lord thy god with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. The second is like unto it, thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

If your neighbor is going to hell and you donít witness, you are proving two things. You donít love your neighbor and you donít love God.

I am told repeatedly that not everyone is going to witness like me. Many members in the body and all that. Iím telling you that Jesus commanded us to go, no exclusions. You will witness if you want to. If itís important to you, then you will take the time to learn. Because you Love Jesus. He died for them, the least you can do is tell them.
