Do you really believe?

Do you really believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and God at the same time? John 1

Do you really believe that He died for the sins of people all over the world and with out his sacrifice we would all be going to hell? John 3:16-17

Do you really believe that he died, rose again and proved himself to be God in the flesh? 2 Cor 5:15 1 The 4:14, I Tim 3:16

Do you really believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, word of God? 2 Tim 3:16-17

Do you really believe that the great commission is a command to the disciples of Jesus? Mat 28:19-20 Mk 16:15-18

Do you really believe that everything that Jesus says is true and without exception? Luke 6:46 John 14:21

Question, can you be saved without being a follower of Christ? What makes you a Christian? Luke 9:23 Jesus says that we are to lay down our lives, take up the cross and follow him?  What could he possibly mean by that? Do you think that he might seriously  be instructing us to give up our lives for him? He told Peter to follow him and he would make him to become a fisher of men. (Matt 4:19) Peter threw down his nets and followed Jesus.

I had a conversation with a pastor friend of mine. We were discussing this very topic. What does it take to be a Christian? Some people go to church once a week, or maybe only on the holidays, and in their minds, they are Christians. Another goes to church twice a week, prays on a semi regular basis and attends a bible study. In their minds, they are Christian also. Another person, is really involved, goes to church at every opportunity, serves in the church and does many wonderful works for God. In their minds they are Christians also, and they will point to their works as proof of their salvation. (works based salvation)

Jesus says that we must be born again John 3:3

Jesus says that his sheep hear his voice and that they follow him John 10:27

Jesus says if we abide in him we will bare much fruit John 15:5

Jesus says if we love him we will keep his commandments john 14:21

Jesus says that we are to love God with all of our heart and love our neighbor as ourselves. Matthew22:37-40

Jesus says that they shall know we are disciples by our love one for another John 13:35

It all breaks down to the motives of the heart. If we try to earn our way to heaven by our good works, we will always fall  short. Our self righteousness will be our stumbling block. But when we humble ourselves and throw our selves at the feet of  God, he is able to lift us up. Our good works will manifest themselves out of our love for God, and our love for our neighbor.

Again, if you really believe the things that I spoke of earlier, then you will do the works that God has called us to do. No works, then that is proof that you really donít love God. No matter what your lips say.

Matthew 15:8 these people draw nigh unto me with their mouths and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

I spoke with a young man at the court house the other day. He was going to court for some minor crime. He readily admitted that he rarely attended church or read his bible, but he claimed that he loved God. I told him, no you donít. He looked shocked, then said yes I do.  I told him again, no you donít. If you did youíd read your bible (Gods word) every day, youíd pray and attend church. Just like if you had a girl friend that you loved, you would call her every day, spend time with her and desire to do the things that she wanted to do. He looked shocked, then finally admitted that I had called it right.

2 Corinthians13:5 says that we should examine ourselves to see if we are of the faith, prove our own selves. Know ye not how that Christ Jesus is in you accept ye be reprobates? In other words, do a little self examination. See if there is enough evidence to convict you of being a Christian. Then examine your motives, to make sure that youíre doing those works for the right reason.

Rev 3:19 As many as I love I rebuke and chasten, be zealous therefore and repent.
